Community Outreach, Recruitment, and Education (CORE)

Our CORE Team serves as a vital link between public safety communications and the community, promoting awareness, education, and engagement. Through outreach initiatives, the team helps the public better understand 9-1-1 procedures and the critical role of emergency communications professionals. Team members build and maintain strong partnerships with community organizations, develop and deliver public education and recruitment initiatives, and create engaging promotional materials for social media and events. They actively represent the organization at community events, including career days, job fairs, festivals, tours, and citizen academies. In addition to outreach, the CORE Team assesses community needs related to public safety communications and works to address gaps through education and engagement. By mentoring new recruits and supporting recruitment efforts, the team plays a key role in strengthening the future of the profession while fostering trust, transparency, and connection within the community.

Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)

Our Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team provides compassionate, confidential support to individuals following difficult or high-stress incidents. Team members are trained to offer supportive listening, mental health first aid, and initial mental health triage in a comfortable, one-on-one setting. Their focus is to promote resilience through emotional stabilization, symptom reduction, and a safe return to everyday functioning. The team also provides crisis intervention when needed and ensures timely referrals to licensed mental health professionals, including emergency services when appropriate. When appropriate, the team facilitates structured debriefings, typically within 72 hours of an incident, allowing individuals or groups directly involved to process their experiences, discuss the impact, explore coping strategies, and learn about available resources. For those requiring ongoing support, the team helps connect individuals with professional care and additional community services.

Peer Support

Our Peer Support Program is dedicated to promoting the emotional, mental, and psychological well-being of all SCECC personnel. Through confidential, non-clinical support, specially trained peers provide a trusted space where employees can connect with someone who understands the unique challenges of the emergency communications profession. The program encourages open conversations about stress and wellness, helping to reduce stigma and strengthen both individual and team resilience. Peer Support members assist employees in navigating personal and professional challenges and serve as a confidential bridge to additional resources, including the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and other support services. While peer supporters are not licensed mental health professionals, they play a vital role in offering guidance, sharing resources, and encouraging appropriate care when needed. The program also extends support to employees’ families by providing education, resources, and assistance during onboarding and in recognizing signs of critical incident stress.
